Jossy Lownes’ artistry was shaped by the reflection of Narragansett Bay, Utah’s unlikely terrain, and the banded hues of color that decorate Arizona’s desert. For Jossy, color comes first: a dab here, a swash or stroke there. She draws from a rich catalog of visual memories. Working in oil and acrylics with brushes, knives, and a gloved hand, eventually the eye informs the process – flowers and faces, landscapes, even non-objective shapes emerge. Her enthusiasm for life conveys energy onto the canvas. Motion follows as people mingle, florals dance, and sunlight plays. Jossy is searching to share the vast wonders of nature and to reveal the aspirations we all secretly hold within.

Jossy holds degrees from Arizona State University and the University of Illinois. Over her 40-year career she has trained with many of the art world’s most notable talents. Her awards number in the dozens, including Best of Shows. She is past President of the Utah Watercolor Society, the Park City Professional Artists, and a past board member of the Kimball Art Center (Park City) and the Sonoran Arts League (Scottdale, AZ). She is a juried participant in the Wickford, Rhode Island Arts Festival and Scottsdale’s famed Celebration of Fine Arts.

Jossy’s paintings are shown in galleries country-wide and held in both private and corporate collections. Some five works are on display at the International Airport in Salt Lake City as part of their permanent collection. The Huntsman Cancer Center displays two of her paintings.

Jossy recently returned to her native Rhode Island. She teaches, paints daily, and, once again, summers at the family’s island cottage on Narragansett Bay.

Jossy is an exhibiting member of the Providence Art Club.
